|Mary Santos Blanchard, 85, widow of Claude Wright Blanchard , Jr. passed away Saturday morning April 20, 2013, at home. Mary was the daughter of the late Captain William A. and Catherine Conlon Santos of Charleston, S.C. Born in Charleston, she was a graduate of Bishop England High School, Sacred Heart Junior College and the Roper Hospital Radiologic Technician Program. She was employed at St. Francis Xavier Hospital as a technologist and secretary from l952 to l955. She then returned as a secretary in l975. In l980, she was appointed Director of Volunteer Services before retiring from Bon Secours/St. Francis Hospital in l990. Mrs. Blanchard was a past member of the Charleston Exchange Club Auxiliary, and local, state and hospital associations of Volunteer Administrators. She was associated with the American Red Cross Volunteer Program, The Retired Senior Volunteer Program, United Way, as well as Blessed Sacrament Church and School, Bishop England High School, and Christ Our King Church.
Mrs. Blanchard was predeceased by her siblings William A Santos, Jr. and Ann S. Henry (James). She is survived by her five children: Claude W Blanchard, III (Cathy) , Kathleen B Smith (Greg), Stephen S Blanchard of Mt Pleasant, William E. (Ned) Blanchard of Arlington, VA, and Joy B. Ardrey (Brett) of Augusta, Ga.; and ten grandchildren: Lee Blanchard, Wright Blanchard, Lawrence Smith (Ida), Catherine Smith, Connor Ardrey, Michael Ardrey, Joseph Ardrey, David Ardrey, Brianna Blanchard and Ali Blanchard. Mary is also survived by two brothers: Eugene Santos (Yvonne), John Joseph Santos (Judy), sisters in law: Mildred Garrett Santos, Helena Blanchard McKay Vivona (Dominic), Kathleen O'Hagan Blanchard, Elizabeth Farmer Blanchard, and brother-in-law David M. Blanchard (Linda) and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Southern Living Home Care, Owner Robin Stanton, Kim Gary, and Elaine Wonokay, and the staff at Beacon Hospice.
The relatives and friends of Mary S. Blanchard are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 Am Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Christ Our King Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening between 6:00 PM and 08:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.
